A soft wind blew over the lonely landscape. A small band of wolves huddled together as the night grew colder. Hope was lost to them their world was dying this mountaintop was the last refuge for their kind. Higher up a lone wolf stood in the light of the full moon wishing for a solution. Food had been scarce for the last few months and this morning they had killed the last deer to be found. All of them were prepared for death though they mourned for the pups the females carried for they would never hunt the night in a forest as their ancestors had done for eons before. The night dark except for the moon that called to the souls of everyone of the wolves. It seemed to bright for the morbid mind frame of her children.
A female voice pierced their minds. "My children why do you morn?"
The smallest female was the first to recover she explained sadly, "We morn for our pups who have no future and may not even be born."
"Are you dead? Are they? I see life in your womb even as we speak. Why then do you mourn the future. You are creatures of the present not the future."
"We have learned to be creatures of the future. If we had not we would have died. Our home has been killed and so have our prey. Now we will surely starve." One of the males replied with a snarl.
"I see. Well I cannot stand by and let such a fire die. I will give you all a choice, beware there are consequences to both choices. Ones you will not see coming."
"We understand mighty one please tell us these choices." The small female pleaded. The rest of the wolves nodded in agreement.
"Very well. You can choose to go to a new planet. It is not yet inhabited by predators. There are a few prey species there already. Though you will have to be careful not to over hunt for while. Or you can can choose to stay here and embrace your fate. The choice is yours."
The group debated for a long time one pair wanted to stay and die where their ancestors had died before them. The other four pairs chose to leave. They felt that any chance to live was better than none. Finally they agreed to part ways.
"Have you decided then?"
The wolves nodded. The moon glowed so bright the wolves had to close their eyes. When they opened them again a beautiful silver she-wolf with glowing purple eyes stood before them. She went to each wolf and placed her nose on their foreheads one by one. After the contact the wolves who chose to leave for the unknown glowed and then faded from the world. The two who chose to stay she gave them a gift to help them survive. . .
